To be board certified means that a doctor has completed the various requirements of the American Board of Surgeons. This group is an independent organization that sets a number of requirements for doctors to meet. In exchange, for meeting the requirements, the doctor gets to say that he or she is board certified. This means that the doctor has been tested by the ABS and deemed to be able to provide competent surgical services.
