Are doctors required to have medical insurance?
For the most part, yes. No doctor wants to be caught without malpractice insurance if he or she is the target of a lawsuit. The insurance will shield the doctor’s finances and family from a jury award. The malpractice insurance rates, in many cases, are determined by the risk of error and probability of lawsuit in the doctor’s particular field. So for a field that historically is the source of very few lawsuits, the malpractice insurance premiums will be lower.
