Mother awarded $900,000 for negligence after delivery

Posted on December 12th, 2011 No Comments

A Virginia mother was recently awarded $900,000 in a medical malpractice lawsuit filed against Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center.  The hospital attempted to appeal the ruling, but last Thursday the verdict was upheld.

The mother went to the hospital in February 2005 to give birth.  Nurses at the hospital were asked to monitor the woman closely because of  her history of pregnancy-induced hypertension.  After giving birth, the mother’s heart rate and blood pressure changed erratically.

The mother’s partner called for help, but nurses arrived late and reported that her heart rate and blood pressure were normal.  Later, an alarm on the woman’s monitors sounded because her blood pressure was dangerously low.  Doctors found that the woman’s surgical incisions from her C-section had not been checked for over six hours and, as a result, her sheets were covered in blood, she had lost about half of her blood, and she suffered brain damage.

Doctors took the woman into surgery and she survived, but still lives with brain damage.  The doctor who performed the C-section delivery had numerous malpractice claims filed against him from previous deliveries and his medical license was later revoked.

A jazz singer has sued the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Pennsylvania Trustees and Penn Medicine after having an MRI brain exam at the hospital that she claims has ruined her career.  S. Denise King states that she visited the hospital in November 2008 and that during her MRI she felt a series of electric shocks.  According to the filing, nurses stopped the exam after King complained about the shocks.

Since the MRI exam, King says she has suffered both physical and mental effects.  At first, King noticed physical complications like tingling, pain and swelling of her hands and arms.  In addition, since the exam, the singer noticed she has had more difficulty with cognitive functions like reading and memorizing music.

The suit is asking for $50,000 in damages for impairing her professionally and for loss of income.

Turtle Creek woman sues for hospital negligence

Kimberlee Blocker of Turtle Creek has filed suit against Forbes Regional Hospital for hospital negligence.  The suit was filed last month and does not specify an amount of damages sought.

Blocker went to Forbes in Pittsburgh for a surgery.  After the surgery, Blocker says doctors told her that there had been a mistake when she was administered medication.  Doctors said that another patient’s syringe inexplicably ended up on the tray in her room and they used it on her to administer an injection.  Blocker says she was mortified when doctors told her she need to be tested for HIV.

For six months, Blocker had to take several tests and await results to find out if she had contracted HIV or other blood-borne diseases from the syringe.  Fortunately, tests showed that she did contract any diseases.

Blocker is pursing the case for the emotional toll the hospital’s mistake took on her life.
