Drug companies frequently pay off doctors

Journalism group ProPublica recently released a report on seven major drug producers and their interactions with doctors and other medical professionals. According to the report, more than 17,000 medical professional accept payments from the seven drug companies. More than 380 of these accepted more than $100,000 in 2009 and 2010.
Researchers note that there are many more doctors, pharmacists and other medical professionals who accept payments from drug companies other than the seven studied. While it is legal for medical professionals to accept payments from drug companies, researchers are interested in the subject because many believe that these payments and gifts lead to swayed judgement.
One common practice researchers and several other sources say drug companies are known for is urging doctors to make “off-label” prescriptions. ”Off-label” prescriptions means prescribing a medication for something that it is not approved to treat.
