Surgeons and Medical Malpractice

Posted on May 27th, 2009 No Comments

Surgery always has some danger associated with it. However, there is a difference between legitimate complications and those that could have easily been avoided. Those that could have been avoided are caused by negligence.

Surgeons are involved in half of all medical malpractice law suits that occur in the US because there are so many things that can go wrong. Among those things are post surgery infections, leaving instruments in the body and operating on the wrong site.

Lawsuit Settled over Flesh Eating Bacteria

Posted on May 22nd, 2009 2 Comments

A medical malpractice lawsuit has been confidentially settled in the case of a woman who developed a flesh eating infection while at the hospital. The woman delivered her second child just before being infected.

After developing gangrene and Group A Streptococcal infection, the woman had to have all four limbs amputated to prevent her death. She is now confined to a wheel chair.

Subcommittee Approves Military Medical Malpractice Bill

Posted on May 20th, 2009 1 Comment

The House Judicial Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law passed a bill that would allow military personnel to sue for medical malpractice. While this may seem like a redundant bill, it is far from it.

The military is currently immune to medical malpractice suits because of a law passed in 1950. This law has left hundreds of military personnel with no recourse after being injured or killed by medical negligence in military hospitals. The bill now goes to the House Judiciary Committee for approval.

IVs and Malpractice

Posted on May 18th, 2009 No Comments

Problems arising from IVs are the third most common reason for medical malpractice suits in the US. If not checked regularly, IV drips can cause problems that can severely injure or even kill a patient.

Unfortunately, there are no set guidelines for how often an IV drip should be checked. This means that a patient's IV could go unchecked all day, giving plenty of time for problems to arise and for complications to form.
