What Is Botox?
Botox is actually a trade name for botulinium toxin, a type of protein produced by Clostridium botulinum, a type of bacteria. It is one of the most toxic substances known to man, and even in small doses, it can cause complete paralysis in the body. This paralysis is called botulism, a well-documented health problem which can occur specifically in canned foods.
Botox has been used in cosmetic procedures for decades now, with the objective being to use small amounts of the toxin to paralyze groups of muscles to reduce wrinkles. While no deaths have been attributed to the cosmetic use of the toxin, there have been a number of unpleasant side effects, namely:
- Paralysis of the wrong group of muscles: Sometimes a doctor will inject the Botox into the wrong area, which can result in drooping eyelids, difficulty blinking, problems smiling, and other facial control problems.
- Allergic reactions: The body may have an allergic reaction to the Botox injection, which can result in swelling, puffiness, and worse.
