Lasik Risks
Lasik eye surgery is a wonderful procedure which frees people from their glasses or contact lenses fairly quickly. The surgery uses lasers to cut part of the eye, restoring vision. While not everyone will end up with 20/20 vision, the majority of people will experience great improvements to their overall sight. Unfortunately, not everyone experiences improvements in their vision.
Like any surgical procedure, results cannot be guaranteed. While this is true, errors on the part of the eye surgeons do not help anything. Eye doctors are just as capable of making errors as any other type of surgeon or medical worker. There is not group of medical professionals that is completely infallible.
One of the most common problems from Lasik is an incorrect amount of correction. Patients can have their vision either under-corrected or overcorrected. Either way, the patient’s vision is not perfect and might require a second surgery. Individuals who have more challenged vision or stronger prescriptions are more likely to have this problem. This can be fixed most of the time but there are some instances where a second surgery is not going to correct the problem or is not possible.
While not an error per se, it could still be necessary to wear glasses or contact lenses to achieve 20/20 vision or the best possible vision. This is rare for the average person but is still possible. In addition, the results may not be permanent. Again, while rare, it is possible for the natural aging process to undo the hard work of Lasik.
