Fertility Doctor Errors

With the average age of marriage rising and the average age of first-time parents rising even higher than that, there has been an increase in the number of couples that have experienced difficulties in conceiving their first child. In turn, this has led to an increase in the number of doctors that are becoming fertility specialists and has increased the potential for errors.

One of the biggest errors seen in fertility practices is a failure to perform any number of the more basic fertility tests. Many family doctors or ob/gyns can perform the basic fertility tests that are going to be asked for by a reproductive endocrinologist or other fertility specialist. As there are so few of those available in the country, a long wait is not unheard of. However, some family doctors and ob/gyns who know their patients are concerned about fertility still fail to perform these very basic tests. In addition, they may also fail to prescribe something to deal with the results of the test.

Another huge mistake among fertility doctors and specialists is a failure to remember or take into account that since there are two people involved in conception, the problem could lie with either one. Some doctors focus on one half of the couple and completely forget the other half.

A third error commonly seen is the prescription of medication before there is evidence of any malfunction or problem that needs a drug. Not only might the drug not actually help whatever problem is present, it may actually make it harder for the couple to conceive. Drugs should not be administered by any doctor unless there ample evidence to support the prescription.
