Choosing a Physician
Not all doctors provide the same level and quality of care. For this reason, it is important to take time and effort when choosing a physician to ensure that your medical needs will be met. Sadly, people do not always put forth this effort. As a result, some may end up with doctors who are not prepared to meet their specific requirements.
Primary Care Physicians vs. Specialists
When you choose a doctor, it is important to keep your particular needs in mind. Some physicians are better suited for general healthcare and have a wide range of knowledge in many medical subjects, while others are specialized in particular subjects. The primary distinctions between these two types of doctor are:
- Primary care physicians: Insurance companies often use this term to refer to a physician whom you visit for routine problems and illnesses.
- Specialists: Specialists are physicians who have received extensive training in particular fields of health. Pediatricians, dermatologists, gynecologists, psychiatrists, and podiatrists may all be considered specialists since they are experts in their respective fields.
Often, a primary care physician will refer a patient to a particular specialist to further address a medical issue. Some insurance plans require that you consult with your primary physician before visiting a specialist if you wish for the cost of the visit to be covered.
