Child Anesthesia Complications
While being placed under general anesthesia poses certain risks for all people undergoing serious medical procedures, the risks can be even more severe when the patient is a child. In general, children’s bodies are more sensitive than full grown adults’, so any issues that develop during anesthesia may be compounded, particularly in infants. Anesthesiologists must take special care to monitor the young patient’s vital signs and make sure that everything is going as planned.
If your child is undergoing a significant surgery and requires anesthesia, you are probably already under a great deal of stress. A negligent or reckless anesthesiologist or other medical professional can only make things worse. If your child has been harmed because of a doctor’s negligence, you may be eligible for compensation. Possible Complications of Anesthesia in Kids
While children are at risk for most of the same anesthesia complications that face adults, there are some additional issues that may unfortunately be more likely with young patients, including:
- Postintubation croup – when the breathing tube is too tight, it can result in swelling of the trachea. Because of a child’s small size, this may be more likely in young patients
- Learning disabilities – while still a controversial topic, some studies have shown that young children who have been placed under anesthesia multiple times are at higher risk for learning disabilities
