Breast Implant Risks
Any surgery is inherently risky. Since breast augmentation surgery is so widespread, some women fail to fully research and understand the risks of the procedure before going under the knife. However, breast implants come with a series of possible complications and adverse effects of which all patients should be aware.
Before undergoing surgery, it is important to designate a qualified surgeon, understand all risks, and review your medical history with your physician to ensure that you are a good candidate for the surgery.
Breast Surgery Complications
Adverse side effects and complications of breast enhancement surgery may include:
- Capsular contracture, in which scar tissue forms around the implant and causes the breast to harden
- Sensitivity changes: Surgery sometimes results in an increase in or loss of sensitivity in the breast.
- Mammogram complications: Since implants obstruct the view of part of the breast, doctors may not be able to properly diagnose breast cancer in its early stages.
- Ruptured implants: Most implants have a lifespan of about 10 years inside the body. When they rupture or begin to leak, they must be removed and replaced in subsequent surgeries.
- Breast feeding complications: Some women may not be able to produce adequate amounts of breast milk after augmentation surgery.
Some complications from breast implants do not show up until months or even years after surgery.
